Temple Square attracted 1,845,895 visitors during June, July and August, nearly half a million more than in any previous summer, according to the Joseph F. Horne, director of the LDS Church facility.

He said the downtown Salt Lake complex may top 4 million visitors before the year ends.Quig Nielsen, the square's public relations director, said August was a record-breaking month with 596,911 visitors, 130,970 more than in August 1987.

"Right now, attendance on the square is running about a 28 percent increase over last year, so it's conceivable we could reach the 4 million mark by the end of the year," Nielsen said."

As of Aug. 31, Temple Square attendance was nearly 2.9 million for the year, compared with nearly 2.26 million for the first eight months of last year, Nielsen said.
