A livestock trailer came loose from its semitrailer truck in Provo Canyon, tipping over and killing 65 sheep, the Utah Highway Patrol says.

The UHP estimated that another 100 sheep wandered off into nearby hills after the Thursday accident on U.S. 189 below Frazier Park. The patrol said the accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. when the westbound truck's trailer somehow became unhooked. The driver, who was not identified, was not hurt, but the trailer - registered to Valley Livestock of Dixon, Calif. - sustained $5,000 damage, the UHP said.

The highway was briefly closed while authorities worked to clear the road.
