Police have appealed to the public for help in recovering a battery-powered wheelchair stolen from the home of an 8-year-old boy who depends on it for transportation.
The wheelchair was stolen Tuesday night from the home of Jared Evans. Jared's father left it beneath the stairs of their apartment at about 9:30 p.m. When the family returned about 11 p.m., the chair was gone. The $10,000 wheelchair was provided to Jared through grants, foundations and fund-raisers, said West Valley City Police Sgt. Gary Oliverson.
Jared, who suffers from a disease related to muscular dystrophy, uses it every day for school, Oliverson said.
"Jared loves the wheelchair, it's his only transportation," he said.
Police found wheel tracks across the lawn that ended at the parking lot, indicating the chair may have been loaded into a truck.
The wheelchair has a blue seat, black headrest, gray wheels, battery, motor and a remote control box on the armrest.
