A new bookstore and gift shop is now open at the Utah State Historical Society offices and Utah State History Museum, 300 Rio Grande St.

During months of construction work, in which a secure exhibit area was built for two major silver exhibits, the old bookstore was blocked off and visitors had to wind through a storage and mailing area.Store manager Debbie Dahl said the new 900-square-foot, well-lighted facility on the east side of the main floor provides plenty of room for browsing. In addition to historical society publications, the bookstore is stocked with books on Utah and Western history.

"Because we are located in a former train depot, people expect to find a lot of material on railroads. We carry many hard-to-find books on railroading as well as train memorabilia," Dahl said.

Also important to tourists, she said, is information on travel, recre-ation and dinosaurs. As part of the museum silver exhibits, the store features books on mining in the West and silver gift items.
