Post offices in Utah County's major cities will be open more hours for the convenience of postal patrons.

Most post offices began extended hours Friday, with a few scheduled to implement new hours Monday.Payson Postmaster Richard Bell said hours were reduced in February in an effort to ease the federal budget crunch.

"We cut out new building construction, purchase of new vehicles and some window service," Bell said. "We have saved so much in those areas, the postal service decided to restore hours for postal customers."

In February Congress ordered the postal service to cut operating costs by $160 million in 1988, and by $270 million in 1989.

Lehi Postmistress Kathy Morgan said the postal service had received many complaints, particularly from businesses. She said a primary goal of new Postmaster General Anthony M. Frank has been to restore hours and service.
