Actor Ed Asner joined a march at a supermarket to protest the use of pesticides that the United Farm Workers union says are hazardous.

Asner, who is appearing in the play "Born Yesterday" in Cleveland, carried a sign reading "Boycott Grapes" outside the supermarket this week.

The lunchtime demonstration was peaceful and attracted about four dozen marchers, officials said.

The California Food and Agriculture Department defends the pesticides captan, dinoseb, methyl bromide, parathion and phosdrin, saying they are not harmful if they are handled properly and if produce is picked on schedule.
