A daylong celebration commemorating the signing of the Constitution will be held in Salt Lake City Sept. 17 and include a national prayer breakfast and a banquet honoring former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese.
The breakfast will include a presentation of Benjamin Franklin's thoughts on the Constitution with Gordon Jump, an actor and television personality, in the title role. Franklin was the eldest statesman at the Constitutional Convention in 1787.The breakfast will kick off the celebration honoring the 201st birthday of the Constitution and is in accordance with declarations by President Reagan and Congress of 1987-1991 as years to celebrate the event. Former Utah congressman Dan Marriott will chair the event, which will include presentations by members of various religious faiths.
At 6:30 p.m., Meese will be presented the second annual "Defender of the U.S. Constitution" award. The price of the prayer breakfast is $10, and the banquet is $125 per person or $1,000 for a table of eight. For more information call 973-1776.
