Preston and Pearl Smith of Sandy have received the third annual Salute to Excellence Award from ZCMI, an award going to people who make an outstanding contribution to their community.

The Smiths are founders of the Salt Lake Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that builds interest-free housing for those in need. The organization is financed by donations and receipts from existing "no-interest" mortgages paid monthly by Habitat beneficiaries and helped by volunteer construction labor.ZCMI officials said the Smiths were instrumental in constructing or renovating four homes while working with several churches in screening candidates and recruiting donated labor. Preston Smith lobbies governmental agencies and local businesses for cash and material donations while his wife coordinates the overall effort.

In addition to those projects, the Smiths solicit, pick up and deliver donated food and clothing to the poor.
