A 14-year-old Provo boy fell to his death Sunday evening while hiking in Rock Canyon with a friend.
Provo Police said Michael Gonzales fell 1,000 feet about 6:40 p.m. He was hiking along the north face of Rock Canyon in the Squaw Peak area when the accident occurred. The boy's friend climbed down the mountain and notified police.
There was no apparent climbing equipment with the boy when he was found by the Provo police mountain rescue squad, said Police Chief Swen Nielsen.
"Hikers should enjoy the canyon, but they should stay on the trails, unless they have the proper equipment or are experienced rock climbers," Nielsen said. "In my 27 years with the Provo Police Department, many people have lost their lives hiking in these mountains."
