CBS News executive Burton Benjamin, Walter Cronkite's longtime producer and author of a recent book about a controversial CBS documentary critical of Gen. William Westmoreland, died Sunday night at age 70, the network said Monday.

Benjamin, who was the executive producer of "CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite" from 1975 to 1978 and developed the award-winning "CBS Sunday Morning," was the network vice president responsible for the creative content of all hard-news broadcasts from 1978 to 1981.Benjamin, who began his career as a newsman with United Press in 1939, retired in 1985 after 29 years with CBS.
