Thousands of people rallied in Armenia on Tuesday, shutting down businesses and schools in a protest following a bloody clash between Armenians and Azerbaijanis in a disputed southern region, officials said.
One of the 25 people the official news agency Tass said were hurt in the Sunday's shootout died the next day, an editor of a Tass affiliate said. The clash occurred in the village of Khadzhaly in the predominantly Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh enclave of neighboring Azerbaijan, Tass said.
But Armenian activist Rafael Po-poyan, in a telephone interview from the Armenian capital of Yerevan, said Armenians did not use weapons. He did not elaborate. An editor for Armenpress, the Tass affiliate in Armenia, said Monday that Azerbai-janis were the only ones carrying firearms.
