Most Americans view immigrants as a negative economic force that contributes little to American culture, a Los Angeles Times poll released Monday found.

The poll, conducted in the wake of the government's highly publicized amnesty and employer sanctions programs, found that attitudes toward immigrants, which have tended historically to be unwelcom-ing, remain virtually unchanged.Of those polled, 42 percent said they were unaware of the amnesty program, 31 percent approved of it and 22 percent disapproved.

Only 40 percent of those polled indicated they believed that immigrants in the past 10 years have enriched the U.S. culture, 46 percent said no.
