A Woods Cross man who already has pleaded not guilty to eight first-degree felony charges of child sexual abuse, rape of a child and sodomy upon a child entered an additional plea of not guilty by reason of mental illness to the same charges Tuesday in 2nd District Court.
Steven L. Tingey, 47, 875 W. Fifth South, pleaded not guilty to the charges at his initial arraignment Aug. 9. At a pretrial hearing Tuesday, Judge Douglas L Cornaby allowed Tingey to enter the additional pleas to the eight first-degree felony charges and one third-degree felony and ordered a mental evaluation done by Davis County Mental Health.Tingey was scheduled for trial Thursday, but that has been continued to Nov. 16, with an Oct. 25 hearing set to review the findings of the evaluation.
Tingey is charged with four counts of sodomy upon a child, two counts of rape of a child, and two charges of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies carrying prison terms of five years to life. The sodomy and rape charges carry minimum mandatory terms of five, 10, or 15 years, and the sexual abuse charges carry minimum mandatory terms of three, six or nine years.
He is also charged with a third-degree felony count of showing harmful or pornographic material to a minor.
The incidents involved two 10-year-old girls and a 14-year-old boy, according to court documents, and occurred between May 1984 and July of this year in Tingey's home.
