Beijing police fined nine foreigners, including five Americans, for handing out Christian pamphlets to Tibetans in an area closed to foreigners, the official Xinhua News Agency said Friday. Police said the foreigners, including four from Britain, Norway, Switzerland and Australia, were caught distributing some 1,000 Christian leaflets to Tibetan herdsmen, peasants and forest workers in central Sichuan Province. The nine missionaries were fined for entering a closed area and for handing out material "connected with Christian preachings" in the Aba Tibetan region and nearby counties inhabited by the Qiang minority, Xinhua reported. It said the foreigners "admitted they had acted against the law." The largest fine of 150 yuan, about $40, was paid by U.S. traveler Gordan Wade.
