The youngest woman in state history to face murder charges as an adult was back in Salt Lake County Friday following a seven-month hiatus from the Utah criminal justice system.
Venus Ann Sherard, 17, was extradited from Tacoma, Wash., where she was picked up July 15 at an alleged crack house. She was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Thursday and is being held without bail.Sherard is charged with second-degree murder in the March 7, 1987, stabbing of Ruby Kelly. Police said Kelly, who had quarreled with Sherard earlier in the the evening at a party, died from numerous stab wounds to the chest.
Sherard was 16 when she was charged, but a 3rd District Juvenile judge certified her to stand trial as an adult. Third District Judge David S. Young issued a warrant for her arrest when she failed to appear for a January hearing.
A woman who gave the name Venus Cruz was arrested in Tacoma and charged with cocaine possession, police spokesman Mark Mann said. The FBI in early August determined Cruz was Sherard.
