Abigail Van Buren will be keynote speaker for the Utah Conference on Strengthening the Family, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 17 at Cottonwood High School, 5715 S. 13th East. She will speak at 9 a.m.

Conference registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost is $10 to $20, depending on the number of those in the family who will be attending, and the fee includes a continental breakfast and lunch.Gov. and Mrs. Norm Bangerter will give the welcome and introduction. Workshops centered around the theme of strengthening the family are scheduled for 10:20 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. At the 2:45 p.m. general session, guest speakers will be Richard and Linda Eyre.

At the close of the conference, Mrs. Bangerter will present cash prizes to winners of this year's children's Summer Reading Program poster contest, sponsored by the Utah State Library and also following the theme of strengthening the family.

More than 350 children from across the state submitted entries. Fifty of the best posters will be displayed at Saturday's conference.

Top award winners in the contest are: First place, Emily Bickmore, 9, Smithfield, Cache County; second place, Megan Stucki, 6, Santa Clara, Washington County; third place, Kendy Knorr, 11, Sandy; and fourth place, Reyannon Gamber, 9, Washington, Washington County.
