The Utah Regional Ballet of American Fork will have a first-ever opportunity to host a regional festival as the Pacific Regional Ballet holds its weeklong event at the Provo Excelsior in early May. Nearly 500 ballet students, teachers, and observers from 18 companies are expected to participate in classes, seminars and special performances, according to URB artistic director Jacqueline P. Colledge.

The event will climax May 7 with a gala performance by six "honor companies" in the deJong Concert Hall at Brigham Young University, the only event of the festival open to the public. Tickets will be $7 each and may be reserved through the BYU music ticket office, 378-7444.Adjudicator Maria Grandy, former director of Joffrey II Dancers in New York, tours the 18 invited companies and selects the companies and pieces that will comprise the gala performance. Grandy, a former member of the Joffrey Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, recently spent time with Colledge's dancers, critiquing performances of two ballet pieces and five original compositions by students in the company.

Faculty for Festival '88 includes Robert Barnett, Rebecca Wright, Willam F. Christensen, Yi Qi Cheng, Mark Lanham, Carol Degnan, Kim Smith Lanham, and Bill Evans.
