A hundred thousand people took to the streets of Rangoon Thursday morning to back an opposition demand that the socialist Burmese government resign.

The demonstration, joined by hundreds of hunger-striking students, mostly gathered around speakers who in strong language urged the establishment of an interim government, diplomats said.Three prominent opposition figures issued a joint statement in Rangoon on Wednesday saying they were ready to form such a government.

Gen. Tin Oo, Aung San Suu Kyi and Brigadier Aung Gyi urged students to be patient and keep up their peaceful street campaign to overthrow the Burma Socialist Program Party.
