Nine of 10 Americans reject decriminalizing all illicit drugs, with a majority saying legalization would lead to increased drug use, according to an ABC News poll.

In addition, 70 percent of those polled said they want the federal government to increase spending to prevent drug abuse.The legalization of marijuana was favored by 25 percent of those polled, but only 7 percent favored the legalization of cocaine and 6 percent said heroin should be legal.

The nationwide telephone poll of 509 adults conducted from Aug. 30 through Sept. 1 showed that 51 percent believed legalizing drugs would lead to increased drug use. Eleven percent said use would decrease and 38 percent said it would make no difference.
