Brigham Young University defensive back Rodney Rice and San Diego State running back Paul Hewitt were named the Western Athletic Conference's defensive and offensive players of the week, league officials announced on Monday.
Rice, a senior defensive back from Atwater, Calif., had five tackles, broke up one pass and intercepted another during the Cougars' 47-6 rout of Texas.His third quarter interception came with BYU leading 20-6, and he returned it 70 yards for a touchdown to break the game open.
Hewitt, a 5-9, 200-pound senior from Monrovia, Calif., rushed for a career-high 259 yards on 45 carries and scored four touchdowns in the Aztecs' 39-36 victory over Air Force on Sunday.
Others nominated offensively included Utah quarterback Scott Mitchell; BYU quarterback Sean Covey; New Mexico placekicker Rick Walsh; UTEP running back John Harvey; Air Force running back Greg Johnson; Hawaii running back Heikoti Fakava and Wyoming quarterback Randy Welniak.
Other defensive nominations included Hawaii back Mike Tresler; Utah back Eric Jascobsen; UTEP end Tony Tolbert; Wyoming back Steve McMillon; Air Force linebacker Brian Hill.
