Theron C. Olsen has been named director of the Division of Services to the Handicapped, according to Norman Angus, director of the Department of Social Services.

Olsen fills the slot left vacant by Gary Nakao, who accepted a position in California.Olsen has a bachelor's degree from Utah State and a master's in social work from the University of Utah. He has served as associate director of the division for the past five years.

Duties for the new director include planning, management and direction of community programs serving the handicapped, including day treatment, residential, family support and supported employment. He is also charged with overseeing operation of the Utah State Training School and with the development of new services and programs in the state.

"I have some very real concerns related to the impacts on services to handicapped individuals as a result of projected deficits in the Medicaid budget," Olsen said. "In reviewing further budgetary impacts, should the tax initiatives pass, the present inadequate levels of funding will be further reduced and will have additional negative impacts on available services."
