As strange as it sounds, a lot of people in Pittsburgh wouldn't be surprised to see Pirates General Manager Syd Thrift resign. Thrift is believed to be upset because the Pirates' owners are upset he spent big bucks to get Dave LaPoint ($425,000-a-year salary) and Glenn Wilson ($850,000) for the pennant drive.

Further, ownership appears reluctant to give Andy Van Slyke and Jim Gott the raises they'll deserve. Thrift is saying nothing publicly, but those who know him say he's upset and hurt his hard work has gone unappreciated.
