University of Colorado defensive back Sam Sutherland, who is serving a deferred sentence for assaulting an ex-girlfriend, has been charged in an assault on his new girlfriend's roommate.

The 21-year-old, 200-pound junior has been suspended from the football team indefinitely, and will not participate in any team activities, pending the outcome of the investigation, head football coach Bill McCartney said Tuesday night.Sutherland, who is on a six-month deferred sentence for an incident in April, faces a charge of third-degree assault. A hearing is set Oct. 24 in Boulder County Court.
