G. James Hutchins, president of Goldfield Engineering and Machine Works, Provo, not only is the Small Business Administration's small-business exporter of the year from Utah, but also is exporter of the year for SBA's Region 8, which includes Utah, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The company also competed for national honors, according to Stan Nakano, SBA director for Utah.Goldfield Engineering is one of the world's foremost manufacturers of alluvial gold and diamond recovery equipment and dramatically demonstrates how a determined, established American company can learn to compete effectively in world markets, he said.

Hutchins purchased Goldfield in October 1988 and decided that significant expansion of the company would come only through international sales. With no previous exporting experience, Hutchins has doubled the company's sales in two years.

About 70 percent of Goldfield's sales last year went to companies in Africa, South America and Asia. In addition to its mining equipment business, Goldfield Engineering also does custom steel fabrication and machine shop work for Utah businesses.
