University of Utah professor J.D. Williams and Grethe Peterson applaud U. President Chase Peterson, above, as he waves to faculty and staff at a retirement reception. Peterson, with his wife, Grethe, at left, served as the university's 11th president for eight years. His tenure was marked by the most successful fund-raising campaign in the school's history, a campuswide recommitment to undergraduate teaching as well as controversy over cold-fusion research and the attempt to rename the School of Medicine after James L. Sorenson. The state Board of Regents is expected to name Peterson's successor within the next few weeks. Peterson will retire June 30.
