Bernie Kosar and Warren Moon, expected to lead their teams in the race for the AFC Central title, may each miss close to half the season because of injuries.

In opening games Sunday, Kosar suffered stretched and sprained elbow ligaments while Moon a fractured bone in his right shoulder. Still, the Browns defeated Kansas City 6-3 and the Oilers edged Indianapolis 17-14 in overtime.Kosar underwent a 21/2-hour examination Monday at the Cleveland Clinic. The four-year veteran out of Miami will miss a minimum of two and as many as eight games.

Kosar was injured when he was sacked by safety Lloyd Burruss in the first quarter.

An Oilers' spokesman said Moon has a fractured shoulder blade and will miss from four to six games.

Moon was hit by linebacker Cliff Odom early in the third quarter.
