A 19-year-old man is listed in serious but stable condition after his car was hit broadside by a train Saturday at 11600 South 500 West.

larry Olson, Salt Lake County fire battalion chief, said the train was moving south at an estimated 55 mph. The car was heading eastand was hit on the side but near the rear, which leads authorities to believe the man was trying to outrun the train, Olson said.Olson said the car was dragged 20 feet before it hit a concrete pillar and before the engineer could stop the train.

The victim, whose identity was unavailabel at press time, was transported by Lifeflight to the University Hospital.
