A single mother came out of the shower Saturday night just in time to find a woman she identified as a former babysitter driving away with her 15-month-old daughter.
The mother alerted police, and when they arrived at the other woman's residence, the woman was there and the baby was safe. The mother told police the woman was an acquaintance who had tended the baby a "few times," said Lt. Joel Campbell, Salt Lake Police. While the mother was taking a shower, someone apparently entered the house, grabbed the baby and took off in a car waiting outside the home.
The mother, sensing something had happened, looked out in time to see the woman drive away, Campbell said.
The suspect was taken to Salt Lake County Jail and booked for investigation of kidnapping and giving false information, according to Campbell. The suspect told police she didn't think the mother took adequate care of the baby and she wanted to protect her.
