Three fires have been linked as possibly being set by the same individual or individuals at approximately the same time, the city fire marshal says.
Fire Marshal John Blundell said it is unknown how the first two fires started, but accidental causes have been ruled out. The fires have been labeled as intentionally set.West Valley firefighters responded early Saturday to two fires about eight blocks apart. The first, at 3502 W. 4490 South, started about 4:30 a.m. in the garage of a Utah Highway Patrol trooper's home. Three cars were destroyed, including the trooper's patrol car. Damage was estimated at $80,000.
The second fire, at 3080 W. 4060 South, also started in the garage and caused about $100,000 worth of damage, destroying the house. Fire units responded to the fire about 4:52 a.m.
The third fire, at 2885 W. 4258 South, was not reported until after 7 a.m., and by that time it was out. Apparently, the fire started in bushes near the front of the house by a camper and burned itself out, Blundell said. No damage was reported.
Blundell said there are no suspects at this time.
