President Bush appeared pale and his voice was raspy at a Rose Garden news conference, but his spokesman says these are side effects of thyroid treatments and Bush "feels fine."

Bush, who has lost 10 pounds over the past few weeks as a result of his hyperactive thyroid, looked wan and tired Monday evening as he and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl met with reporters.Bush coughed several times and his voice at times seemed an octave higher than usual.

White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said the president's appearance and his sometimes croaky voice were due to the reduction in Bush's thyroid function as a result of medication he is taking. "He feels fine," Fitzwater said.
