A conductor who had been helping a passenger slipped and fell to his death under his Long Island Rail Road train, officials said.

Railroad spokesman Brian Dolan said that when the train stopped at the Sayville station Monday, the unidentified passenger stumbled and fell to the platform as he got off the train.Dolan said the conductor, Brian Flynn, 32, of Centereach, stepped off the train to help the man.

"When the man said he was OK, Flynn signaled to the conductor that all was clear to move the train," Dolan said.

But then, as Flynn attempted to grab a hand rail and boost himself onto the moving train's steps, he slipped and fell under the wheels.

He was the father of three young children.
