Police have released a couple who were staying in a motel room where one man was fatally shot and another wounded Friday night as they were apparently forcing their way into the couple's room.
Captain Dan Pearson, Midvale Police, said the two have been questioned and the investigation is continuing. He said police believe the shooting was in self-defense.Steve Robertson, 27, and his wife, Shelly, 24, of Grand Junction, Colo., told police they saw three men loitering in the parking lot of the Discovery Motel, 380 W. 7200 South, as they unloaded their car to begin a vacation celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary.
Pearson said the couple told police someone knocked on their door a few minutes later. Robertson told police he was nervous because he thought the men were going to rob them, so he had his wife crack the door open while he stood back with a high-caliber handgun.
Pearson said three men allegedly broke through the doorway into the room. Robertson fired two shots and hit two of the men, identified as George O'Dell, 23, Sandy, and Theodore Clay, 20, Sandy. O'Dell's brother, William, no age given, was not hit.
The three left the scene in a waiting car driven by a 19-year-old Midvale woman. She drove the men to Cottonwood Hospital and employees alerted police.
George O'Dell was taken by helicopter to LDS Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Clay was in fair condition Saturday at Cottonwood Hospital.
Police booked William O'Dell into the Salt Lake County Jail early Saturday morning for investigation of robbery.
