The central committee of the Salt Lake County Democratic Party will meet Saturday to choose six nominees to fill the remaining term of former county commissioner Dave Watson.

Watson resigned Aug. 29 saying he wanted to put the bad memories of his May arrest on drunken driving and cocaine possession charges behind him and get on with his life. The county central committee will submit its list of nominees to Republican commissioners Bart Barker and Mike Stewart, who will then appoint Watson's successor from among those nominated.

In his letter of resignation to Barker and Stewart, Watson recommended John Hiskey, Salt Lake County Public Works Department director, to fill out his term, which ends in January. Hiskey, a Democrat, ran for a commission seat against Stewart in 1980.

The committee is expected to submit Hiskey's name and the names of current Democratic commission candidates Dale Gardiner and Jim Bradley as nominees. Gardiner, the mayor of Riverton, is running against Republican former commissioner Tom Shimizu for the two-year seat Watson held. Bradley is challenging Stewart.

The commissioners agree Hiskey is the best qualified to fill Watson's remaining term because he could step into the position with minimal orientation.
