Queen Elizabeth II conferred an honorary knighthood Monday on Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, commander of allied forces in the Persian Gulf war, in a private ceremony shorn of the traditional English pageantry.

The queen presented him the ribbon of knighthood along with a star and a badge during a two-hour visit to Tampa, Fla.Afterward, the British monarch and the general appeared on the steps of MacDill Air Force Base, headquarters of the U.S. Central Command that Schwarzkopf oversees.

The general is the 58th American since World War II to receive an honorary knighthood.
