Voters in Croatia overwhelmingly endorsed their nationalist regime's demand for the breakup of the Serbian-majority Yugoslav federation, incomplete referendum results showed Monday.

A statement issued by the commission that oversaw Sunday's polling said 86.37 percent of the republic's 3.65 million voters turned out for the referendum and that 78.9 percent of the ballots had been counted.Of the tabulated ballots, the statement said, 94.22 percent favored an "independent and sovereign Croatia." Maintaining -Croatia within the six-republic federation was favored by 5.38 percent of voters.

Updated returns were expected Monday afternoon and final results on Tuesday.
