About 200 people demonstrated in the East German city of Leipzig, demanding they be granted the right to emigrate, West German news reports said Wednesday.

The demonstrators marched through downtown in heavy rain to Market Square, where police in civilian clothes halted an attempt to form a human chain, West German newspaper accounts from the south central city said. The dispatches, attributed to witnesses, said no arrests were observed.

The protest apparently was timed to coincide with the annual Leipzig autumn trade fair, which began Sunday and is attended by many Westerners.
