Bill Shoemaker, the all-time winningest jockey who was paralyzed from the neck down in an auto accident last month, has regained his ability to speak, Hollywood Park president R.D. Hubbard said Sunday.

"His voice is like a whisper, but it was clearly audible," said Hubbard, who spoke to Shoemaker by telephone at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., where he is undergoing therapy.
