Honus Wagner would probably be honored. He definitely would be shocked.
One of Wagner's baseball cards was sold this weekend for $15,000 at an auction of baseball memorabilia at DuMouchelle Art Galleries. The Wagner card was issued about 1909 by Sweet Caporal cigarettes. It, as well as cards from a rival tobacco company, were withdrawn following protests by Wagner, a Hall of Fame shortstop and adamant foe of smoking.
The card was purchased by a bidder from Rhode Island who asked to remain anonymous, gallery vice president Ernest DuMouchelle said. He said he didn't know how many similar Wagner cards were in existence.
