Alta, the defending champion, and Bingham, a team rich in baseball tradition, started the state boys' baseball championships off Monday. The Hawks played the Miners in the opener at Derks Field in 4A play.
A few miles to the south, West played Bountiful in the opener of the 3A Boys' High School Championship at Ken Price Park. This will be the final tournament appearance for West's veteran coach Gene Plaga.Alta, with a 14-5 record and second place in Region Two, was expected to face tough opposition from Bingham, 15-4 this year and winner of the Region Three crowns.
In other 4A games, Cyprus played American Fork, Brighton played Viewmont in a 4:30 p.m. game, and Pleasant Grove will wrap-up opening day with a 7 p.m. game against Weber.
In 3A, Springville played Spanish Fork, Payson played Murray at 4:30 p.m., and Dixie will play the final game at 7 p.m. against Tooele.
The two divisions will alternate between the two baseball parks throughout the week.
