Freshman pinch hitter Greg Quam hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday night to give San Diego State a 6-4 victory over Brigham Young to advance to the finals of the Western Athletic Conference baseball tournament.
The Aztecs (41-19), who eliminated Wyoming in a losers' bracket game earlier Friday, was scheduled to face unbeaten Hawaii (48-14) Saturday for the double-elimination tournament title.With the score tied 4-4, the game went into the extra inning before Quam hit his home run over the right field fence, bringing in Rick Page from second.
The score was tied 1-1 in the fifth inning before Page hit a single with the bases loaded, driving Brent Ferguson. On the same play, Cougars' second baseman Brent Turley overthrew first base, allowing Steve Dietz to score, putting the Aztecs in front 3-1.
BYU (35-15) caught up in the eighth inning with RBI singles by Turley and Jeff Howes to tie the game, 4-4.
Reliever Mike Quick came on in the ninth inning to retire four of six batters to earn his first win against one loss.
