Catherine Moser, 16, and Taryn Gagon, 13, both of Salt Lake City, will appear with stars of the Kirov Ballet in Washington, D.C., on Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25. Catherine will dance in "Chopiniana" and "Le Corsaire," and Taryn, as a Merliton in "The Nutcracker."

Both girls are students at the Universal Ballet Academy, which opened last September, and are enrolled in Maryland public schools for their academy subjects, while pursuing a full course of artistic training.The Universal Ballet Academy is an American dance academy linked with the Kirov Ballet of Leningrad, directed by Oleg Vinogradov, who travels back and forth between the United States and the USSR. Many Russian experts serve on the teaching staff at the academy.

- WINNERS have been announced in last week's concerto competition sponsored by the Westminster Chamber Orchestra. First-place winners will be featured soloists with the orchestra in 1991-92, and second- and third-place winners will be presented in solo recitals in the new Jewett Center for the Performing Arts on Westminster campus.

In the pianists' competition, winners were Garry W. Barnett, first place; Jenny Naylor, second place; Amanda Moody, third place; and honorable mentions to Mira Gill, Marko Laitinene, Natalie Nilsen and Mayde Taylor.

In a second competition for vocalists and other instrumentalists, winners were Rosalie Lund, violin, first place; Jill Hawkes, soprano, second place; Heath Wolf, marimba, third place; and honorable mentions to Karen Brookens, soprano, Lynn Maxine Rosen, violin, and Carolyn Talboys, soprano.
