While high school rugby may not get the recognition in Utah as football and basketball, the state can boast two of the top five prep rugby teams in the nation this year - including the national champion.

Highland High won its fourth consecutive national title at the USA National High School Rugby Championships, which was held Friday and Saturday in Indianapolis, Ind. Skyline High's team placed fifth in the eight-team invitational tournament which featured the nation's top teams. The Rams entered the tourney as the No. 1 seed with a 10-0 record this season.

In Saturday's final match, Highland blew out Walt Whitman High (Washington D.C.) 29-0 to win the tournament without giving up a single point.

For Highland and coach Larry Gelwix, it was the fifth national championship in six years. The Rams finished the season with a 13-0 record, outscoring their opposition 382-11 on the year.

"We really had a balanced scoring attack and used a swarming defense to shut the other teams out," Gelwix said.
