A pregnant woman and her unborn child died Thursday after the car the woman was driving collided with a Salem police vehicle in front of her home near Payson.

Renae Lunak, 38, of 12011 S. U.S. 6, died at Mountain View Hospital of head and neck injuries about 90 minutes after the 8:10 a.m. accident, a hospital spokeswoman said. Lunak, who was eight months pregnant, was not wearing a seat belt, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper David Guest.Salem police officer James Bailey, 27, 415 S. Center St., Santaquin, was treated for a head bruise and a strained back before being released from Mountain View, the spokeswoman said.

The accident occurred when Lunak, southbound on U.S. 6, attempted to turn left into her driveway and collided nearly head-on with Bailey's northbound Bronco, Guest said. Bailey was traveling about 50 mph, he said. The speed limit is 55 mph.

"Apparently she didn't see him coming," the trooper said.

The blue Bronco might have been difficult for Lunak to see because of large trees that cast a shadow over the vehicle as it approached, Guest said. The road is straight and flat.

No citations were issued in the accident, the trooper said.
