About 200 university students Friday attacked a U.S. military housing compound with firebombs and clashed with Korean riot police on guard, a U.S. military statement said.

No injuries or damage were immediately reported in the attack, which came on the eve of protests to mark the 11th anniversary of the Kwangju pro-democracy revolt in which at least 200 people died. The renewed violence also came as dissidents challenged the government to allow a funeral march for a student beaten to death by police to pass through the capital Saturday.

There have been violent protests in Korea almost daily since Kang Kyung-dae, a 20-year-old university freshman, was fatally beaten by police April 26. Students from nearby Danguk University charged the American housing compund.
