The recently established Spanish Fork Arts Council has announced the city's first arts pageant in some time.

City officials approved $4,000 in funding for the eight-member council earlier this year in the hopes of "developing human cultural potential" and "representing the wide cultural interest of the community," according to a resolution that established the board. The arts council's budget included provisions for sponsoring fine arts performances, such as a set of musical, film and dance performances and arts lecture series. City Council members requested the board earlier this year to consider an arts pageant.

The pageant, scheduled June 18 to 24, will "celebrate the arts," according to council members. The week's activities include exhibitions of art, theater, music and dance, culminating with a Monday night performance by Brigham Young University's Young Ambassadors group.

Also, the council will hold a "brown bag" series of performances during the week from noon to 2 p.m. at the city's Memorial Square Park. Scheduled performers include a bluegrass band, a puppet show and dance and theater exhibitions.

The city center, 40 S. Main, will also host a weeklong exhibition of paintings, sketches and photography.

During the year, the non-profit group will provide some financial support and guidance to the Spanish Fork Community Theater group and the Spanish Fork Children's Theater group, as well as oversee the Miss Spanish Fork Pageant.
