Verl Asay, former Utah state senator, died May 16, in Murray.
Mr. Asay, 69, served eight years in the Senate. Before that he served for several years on the Kearns Town Council.An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mr. Asay and his wife, LaVaun, served three missions for the church in recent years including in Washington state, Toronto and London. He served as a bishop, a ward clerk, a high priest group leader and, at age 36, became the youngest patriarch in the church at that time. He also taught seminary.
Funeral will be Monday, May 20, at 2 p.m. in the Taylorsville 10th Ward chapel, 4950 S. 1950 West. Friends and family may call Sunday, 4 to 7 p.m., at McDougal Golden Rule Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Road, and Monday at the meetinghouse, 1 to 1:40 p.m. Interment will be at Elysian Burial Gardens.
