A fire raced through a Long Island shopping mall Thursday night, killing one employee of a variety store and injuring scores of shoppers and workers, authorities said.

A second employee was missing and firefighters early Friday searched the basement of the store for her body.The fire broke out at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the McCrory's variety store at the Walt Whitman Mall, sending hundreds of shoppers and employees running from the heat and smoke, authorities said. McCrory's was gutted and the fire spread, damaging other shops.
