Tom Costello fired a 4-under-par 68 Wednesday to take the lead after one day of the 36-hole U.S. Open local qualifying at the Salt Lake Country Club. Costello, an assistant pro at Stansbury Park, had the inside track to be one of four local qualifiers going into Thursday's second 18.

Just four of the 42 golfers competing will move on to the sectionals, where qualifiers will advance directly to the U.S. Open to be held this year at Hazeltine CC in Minnesota June 13-16.Three players fired 69s on the cool overcast day, including Mountain View assistant Milan Swilor, Golf City pro Greg Stimpson and Michael Allen, a PGA Tour exempt player who held first-round leads at last year's British Open and Los Angeles Open. Swilor has been one of the Utah qualifiers each of the past two years.

At 70 were Pebblebrook assistant Steve Schneiter and Alpine assistant Kim Thompson, while three pros, Eric Nielsen, Bruce Summerhays and Kury Reynolds stood at 71.
