Italy's top anti-Mafia official said almost 15 percent of local administrators - 17,000 people - were under judicial investigation for possible Mafia links, corruption or abuse of office.

"They're not all Mafiosi, but these figures are still significant," said High Commissioner Domenico Sica, a magistrate who heads the national anti-Mafia task force.He made the disclosure at a conference of police chiefs in Florence Monday. About 124,000 people work in regional, municipal and provincial administration.
