Eight Utah County residents have been honored by United Way as Volunteers of the Year.

Award recipients are: Rosamond Ballard, Dawn Cowan, Jim Hale, Madeline Keen, Lena Losser, Darryl J. Stewart, Eva Stoneman, and Stella Welsh.Rosamond Ballard, Payson, has served as a volunteer and docent at the Springville Museum of Art for more than 15 years. She is also active on the committee to restore the historic Peetneet School in Payson to a community arts center.

Dawn Cowan, Provo, has given 4,248 hours of service as a volunteer at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, and now serves as chairman of the emergency room volunteers.

Jim Hale, Provo, has overcome his own handicap in order to serve others. He carried his oxygen tank up a long flight of stairs to help count the money for the March of Dimes Mother's March fund-raising event.

Madeline Keen, Provo, is personally responsible for covering one-third of the Provo City Library's holdings since she joined the staff as a volunteer in 1989. Keen has also organized a library at the United Church of Christ.

Len Losser, Payson, has put in more than 6,000 hours of volunteer service at Mountain View Hospital in Payson since her first day in 1969. She has served as vice president, president-elect and president of the volunteer organization.

Darryl J. Stewart, Payson, gives one-on-one attention and training to a handicapped boy at the Tiny Tots Care Center in Orem. During each visit Stewart helps the boy with activities designed to improve motor coordination, leg strength, confidence and communication skills.

Eva Stoneman, Spanish Fork, was instrumental in the organization of Utah County chapters of "Cansurmount" and "I Can Cope," two cancer patient support groups sponsored by the American Cancer Society. She also organized the Cancer Support Group at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

Stella Welsh, Orem, has served as a member of the board of the Housing Authority of Utah County for five years, and as a board member for the Weatherization Assistance program for three years. She is also a member of the Orem Beautification Committee and the Utah Tree Commission.

Award recipients were chosen by a volunteer board.
